Knives Out (2019)
There are certain movies that come along that I have mixed feelings about and hold off on watching for quite a while. Maybe I not everyone does this, but I usually check the director of a movie for a true indicator of quality. If I like other things they’ve done (if I’ve even heard of them) I’ll usually give the movie a shot. This can be exceptionally fair for directors like Wes Anderson, who have largely similar movies tonally and aesthetically and basically feel like the same thing with a different story from one movie to the next.
But with Rian Johnson, it’s tough. I mean, before this I only knew one movie on his résumé. That movie is Star Wars: The Last Jedi, arguably the most polarizing film in the Star Wars saga for SW fans. And this SW fan was in the massively disappointed crowd, so naturally when I heard about this movie I thought “I’m not supporting that walking doorknob Rian Johnson or his shit storytelling. But fuck that’s a lot of good people so I’m tempted.”
When I say a lot of good people I mean Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jaime Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, and the now late Christopher Plummer. They are all in an ensemble murder-mystery that really does keep you guessing left and right.
Everything that happens seems so well calculated and executed. It’s honestly one of the most engaging films I’ve seen recently.
Now I’m not one to be too long-winded (ha), so I’ll get to the point. Netflix just paid nearly half a billion dollars for the next two sequels to this, and despite that being steeper than I feel like most established franchise movies merit, it says something. This thing is now on Prime Video, check it out while you still can!

My positive opinion of this film will not necessarily guarantee the same opinion of others. Furthermore, I don’t want to hear your negative “I didn’t like this movie, Brandon! How dare you make me think I might enjoy something I subsequently didn’t derive joy from while or after viewing!” bullshit. Thank you for your time.
