“Free Guy”

I guess I didn’t understand the premise of this flick when I originally saw previews for it that I no doubt half paid attention to. Ryan Reynolds seemed to be behaving very Ryan Reynolds-y and I didn’t really know if it was going to turn out great if I’m being honest. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ryan Reynolds, from “Buried” to “Deadpool” and from “Just Friends” to “Van Wilder” and even despite a little “Green Lantern”. And holy fuck, would you believe that actress Jodie Comer from The Last Duel is in this after I made all my comments about wanting to see more of her for superficial and non-superficial reasons. I want to mention that this movie is currently available on Disney+ to check out if you wanna.

As far as the premise goes, I won’t spoil it, but initially what I thought it was is definitely not what it turned out to be. It gave me real Bill Murray in Groundhog Day vibes at first, and I feel like that’s been done to death and is rarely done well (btw, the movie “Palm Springs” does it VERY well so check it out on Hulu). We get a weird spin in that there is a subplot that turns out to be more of the main plot where a couple of employees at the company the movie centers around find out that their boss might’ve stolen their work and is going to great lengths to hide the truth.

Reynolds doesn’t get enough credit for all of his acting talent since he’s always busy being annoyingly good looking. He is really great here despite this being a pretty light-hearted movie that I honestly can’t fully lump in to any one genre of film. Up-and-comer Jodie Comer (ha, wordplay) is showing that she deserves a more permanent spot in Hollywood, looooove her. This movie had me legitimately cracking up quite a few times too, which is nice since I’m not a big laugher since I just usually don’t find shit that funny and I’m also bad at faking it too.

This movie, “Free Guy” (which I have been talking about for a few paragraphs now, try to keep up) is very reminiscent of other films you might’ve seen before. Maybe a little Groundhog Day, some of the Truman Show, and definitely some Ready Player One in there among others. It’s honestly a delight, it’s great to be reminded of things you enjoy so long as it doesn’t go too all-in on it, which it really doesn’t imo. I think the two actors I’ve mentioned have great chemistry. Channing Tatum also has a bit part here and he serves up some well-delivered comedic lines. Taika Waititi is a breath of fresh air, I like most of the things I’ve seen him in a lot. Check out the movie “What We Do in the Shadows” which is like a mockumentary-style film that he co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in. Also Joe Keery who plays Steve in Stranger Things is very good.

Like I said, “Free Guy” is on Disney+ now, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. I liked it and thought it was nice and had some good moments. I thought it was a cool fucking adventure and you can’t take that away from me. It might not be your cup of tea but I also don’t give a shit because hey you can’t please all the people all the time and I’m not the boss of you. So stop theoretically attacking my opinion. Have a nice day. Or don’t.

Also, there’s this app I’ve been using for years called “JustWatch” that I love to use for finding movies streaming. You just choose your streaming services and search a movie or show to find out where you can watch it, paid or subscription or free with ads. Check it out!
