My Thing With Batman

Me and Batman

A lot of people ask me who my favorite Batman is, to which I usually say Michael Keaton. But in reality I don’t have a favorite, I like them all for different reasons. Pattinson for his dark, grittiness. Affleck for his intensity and rage. Bale for his grounded, unrelenting dedication. Clooney. Kilmer for his ability to portray Batman well in a movie that seemingly didn’t want anything to be good (yes, that includes Jim Carrey, he was obnoxious as the Riddler, even for Jim Carrey and that’s saying something). Keaton for his cut and dry, serious performance setting the tone for an entire movie and sequel. West for his dead-pan, comedic interpretation set in a ridiculous campy world. Kevin Conroy for voicing the character to literal perfection in the perfect animated series as well as several other installments including most of the Arkham games. They’re all good, with a few exceptions. But to say who’s best is really not my thing.

I also appreciate people stopping me and asking what I thought of the new movie, even though I’m awkward as shit. I love talking movies, especially Batman. Still awkward about people wanting to have a conversation with me, not really sure why they would want to put themselves through that. I wouldn’t want to talk to me if I were someone else, but maybe that’s chronic depression and anxiety with heavy self-loathing talking.

I don’t really have a favorite Batman movie in particular, either. I love Batman (1989) and Batman Begins quite a bit but I have to be in the mood for either. To be faaaair, I do watch the 1989 one like once a month, so I guess that one does edge the rest out if I had to give an answer based on view count. My only regret is I couldn’t possibly give them all of the love they deserve. But I’ve been doing my best.

Batman does bring me some joy despite the whole mental health issues thing. I tend to surround myself with bat-things, all sorts of shit I mentioned in my review for the movie “The Batman”. There’s something about the whole concept that I’m just enamored with. Maybe you have your thing. Some people collect Harley Davidson shit, U of M or MSU, Golden Girls, Superman, John Deere, or whatever. My thing is Batman. You can like it or love it.

I don’t know why but I just wanted to share this random string of thoughts about Batman with you. I’m watching one of those newer Planet of the Apes movies right now and I don’t think I’ll feel strongly enough about it to write a review, but maybe I’ll do one for the next one I watch afterwards.
