I like Will Ferrell, I really do. Mostly his older stuff. Well, older movies than this I guess. I like Zach Galifianakis. Especially on Between Two Ferns, he’s incredible, and check out the blooper reels, they’re amazing. But somehow with these two, either they got old for me or I just grew tired of the brand of humor they typically put off in their movies. But I’m keeping an open mind. Kinda.

Will Ferrell plays career politician congressmen Cam Brady, who has some pretty typical political scandals like you’ve heard about from elected officials under his belt. His most recent, during his unopposed run for his 5th term, causes a downturn in his polling numbers and spurs some business partners to seize the opportunity to back a new candidate. Enter Galifianakis, portraying the character Marty Huggins, who is a very eccentric busy-body about town whose job I guess is like something to do with tourism. With 8 weeks to go before the election, there is very little time to reform Cam or reinvent Marty to beat one or the other out for the next congressional term.

Will Ferrell says a lot of his typical ad-libbed type of things that he perfected in Anchorman and have since been done to death. Zach Galifianakis has a more quirky weirdo to play, which is at least not the same one he’s done a thousand times. There are some very mild laughs or grins here and there, which are few and far between from each of the two stars. Jason Sudeikis plays Ferrell’s manager and he’s pretty good here. Dylan McDermott, Sarah Baker, Brian Cox, John Lithgow, and Dan Aykroyd are not bad given what little the they have to do.

I don’t think this one takes being in the right mood, this is just not my type of comedy, at least not anymore. There really aren’t any relatable characters on screen for me and I don’t really feel like I care about anyone or anything that happens to them. They do some things to redeem their characters but not enough to win me over. I mean, I wouldn’t give a shit about not giving a shit if anything particularly funny at all was going on.

I don’t know what made me watch this, I guess I wanted to take a shot on something and see if it was better than I expected. It was worse. So much worse. It’s on HBO Max, go ahead and don’t bother checking it out.
