I’d be remiss if I didn’t take some time to mention something. This movie was made by Adam Sandler’s production company “Happy Madison”. We need to talk about Adam Sandler quick. Growing up, I thought he was the funniest guy there was. I watched Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison until I wore out the fucking tapes. Then there was The Wedding Singer which was more on the romantic side, but I still loved it. The Waterboy, which was starting to get ridiculous and Sandler was doing a stupid voice, was okay. And Big Daddy, which was good, despite being a little over-emotional.

Then, things took a big turn with Little Nicky. He put on an even dumber voice than with Waterboy, and the plot was…well…bad, as was the comedy. It just all felt phoned in and lazy and I hated it. And I haven’t been a big fan of any comedy he’s made since and they’ve actually seemingly continually gotten worse. So I guess it becomes the age old question, was Adam Sandler really good and then he went to complete shit as I would assume? Or was I just an immature adolescent who just thought he was funny at the time and now I’ve outgrown him but the quality has stayed the same? I realize this conundrum has been posed before, but I WANT ANSWERS. If I go back and revisit his movies I originally loved, I still enjoy them quite a bit. But I fear I may have been indoctrinated into liking those. Who knows?

Anyway, let’s get down to brass tacks, Grandma’s Boy! This one came out after the demise of my enjoyment of Sandler movies despite Sandler not actually being in it. This movie has a lot of funny moments. We now need to talk about Nick Swardson. I remember really enjoying his standup album “Party” and finding some bits particularly hilarious. He honestly makes this movie and this was the first I experienced him. If you take him out of this film, it would be legitimately unwatchable. So thank goodness for him and his little quips throughout that had me cracking up when I first watched this. I mean they’re not fresh anymore for me, still enjoyable though.

The issues are: look at our leading man, Allen Covert. His line deliveries are entirely lacking comedic charisma, as is true with many other key players in this flick. There are a lot of jokes here that just fall flat for me from a variety of characters. Sure I enjoyed them in 2006, and I still do like some of them now. But if I checked this out for the first time today, it’d be a one and done deal. I don’t think I would find this as funny right now. But since I can’t see it with a fresh eye, I have to accept my biases and know that I enjoy it anyway.

So I would say check this out, if you think you might like what is basically a stupid stoner comedy about video games. And please, if you’ve never watched any Adam Sandler movies and you happen to be an exact clone of me raised in the same way as I was otherwise, watch Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison and let me know what you think. Also, maybe give me a call, it could be interesting. I might like to see if I can transfer my consciousness into you and get my pre-hospitalization body including my left eye back.

Very light recommend. It might actually suck, but I like it.
