This movie. Man, I’ve been meaning to get around to it. I cannot stress this enough, the late great Harold Ramis knew what the fuck he was doing. Mostly writing, but he was a solid director too. Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Analyze This, Animal House…the list goes on. Such an immensely talented guy he was.
Our marquee movie “Bedazzled” follows a hopelessly in love man named Elliot portrayed by Brendan Fraser. He has such a crush on this girl he works with named Alison portrayed by Frances O’Connor who I have not seen in many other things I can recall. Elliot is so in love that he ends up agreeing to a deal with the Devil (Elizabeth Hurley, who is at the height of her good-lookingness in this flick in my opinion). Elliot has 7 wishes to use in order to become the man he thinks he needs to be based on what he knows about Alison to win her affections.
The unrequited love Elliot has is so severe that Alison doesn’t really know he exists and he has to use what small bits of information he can gather about her to try and win her over by becoming an entirely different person with each wish. The movie’s broad pallet in regard to the kinds of men Elliot becomes as he uses his wishes from the Devil are what make this movie an all-time fav of mine. Fraser does spectacular work portraying several vastly different characters, all based off the main character Elliot despite being wildly different as well, as his mannerisms seep into even the most charismatic personas. This is, I imagine, very hard to pull off as an actor but he does it extremely well.
Obviously there is struggle and conflict as there is with any movie, and it’s very well handled and makes for what I think is a great message to put out there, which is another reason I love this motion picture. Also, the relatability of the unrequited love stuff is unfortunately also something that hits home for me and gives me hope. Not really on the “gives me hope” part, but what can you do? I think this movie has a lot of heart and great comedy and I don’t know, I just absolutely adore it.
So I say check it the fuck out, but maybe that’s the sad hopeless romantic sap in me. “Bedazzled” is on this free ad-based service called “Tubi” that is a nice one for if you like occasionally having ad breaks that you can’t control. But seriously, love it. Watch it.
