A Quiet Place (Throwback)

April 9, 2018

Yet another example of me being reaffirmed in my belief that movies are best when you go in unititiated. “A Quiet Place” is an intense thriller, full of well orchestrated scenes where sound, or lack of sound, are used to great effect. I loved this flick a lot, but I almost didn’t see it, because the trailers did not sell me at all. It took great critical and user reviews coming out to change my mind. I’m not sure how the trailer could have been done better though, it’s a unique movie.

Luckily for me, I dove in and took a shot at this movie and I was not disappointed. From the very beginning, it’s intriguing. Everything is quiet. Everyone is speaking in sign language. It quickly becomes clear that sound or at least loud noises are being completely avoided. The use of music and silence is huge throughout the movie, it sets the tone of every scene and moment.

I expected the monsters to be unseen by the audience, at least until later parts of the story (a la Stranger Things) but that’s not the case. We as an audience get an idea of what these creatures look like with increasing exposure throughout. It’s so fucking well done. I feel that movies from prior decades have had cartoonishly bad monsters, but luckily the CGI has caught up and doesn’t take you out of the scene.

The performances by the entire cast here are fantastic. There is very little-to-no comic relief to be had. Almost no comic relief in a movie directed by and starring a guy I know almost exclusively as Jim Halpert from The Office, so that’s a nice surprise.

If you don’t mind being completely on edge for 90 minutes, if you don’t mind silences so tense you can hear idiot cinema personnel talking on their two-way radios outside the theater, then absolutely see “A Quiet Place” I fucking loved it a lot. Available on Paramount+ or for purchase at all major digital and physical movie retailers.

10/10 (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Do you guys read and/or like these reviews? Do you prefer I make them Facebook posts as opposed to linking to an outside site? Should I make a fb page to post this stuff on as opposed to my personal profile? I like doing these but I’m looking for feedback I guess
